Understanding Your Health: STIs and Hepatitis C

Getting tested is a proactive, healthy choice. At Bergen Now, we provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to learn about your body and your sexual health.

What Are STIs?

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are common infections that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact, including intercourse, oral sex, and other intimate skin-to-skin contact.

Why Testing Matters: Many STIs don't exhibit obvious symptoms, which means you could have one and not be aware of it. Testing is the only way to be certain, and early diagnosis leads to better health outcomes.

Treatment Is Available

If your test results are positive, know that all of these conditions are treatable or manageable. We are here to provide clear information and support your next steps.

Depending on the infection, treatments may include:

  • Antibiotics (for bacterial infections like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis).
  • Antiviral Medications (for viral infections like Herpes and HIV, which help manage the condition and reduce the risk of transmission).
  • Oral or Topical Medications (for other infections like Trichomoniasis and Genital Warts)

What Is Hepatitis C (Hep C)?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver. While it is sometimes passed through sexual contact, it is most spread through contact with infected blood (such as sharing needles or personal items like razors).

Key things to know about Hep C:

  • Silent Infection: Many people have lived with Hepatitis C for years without any symptoms and are unaware they have it.
  • When Symptoms Do Appear: If symptoms develop, they are often general and may include:
    • Dark urine
    • Fatigue
    • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
    • Joint pain
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea

Hep C Treatment

The good news is that Hepatitis C is highly treatable:

  • Curable: Modern antiviral medications cure Hep C in most cases.
  • Timely Treatment Matters: Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent long-term complications and severe liver damage.
  • Personalized Care: The exact treatment duration depends on the type of medication prescribed and the strain of the virus.
