Bergen New Bridge Medical Center Raises Stigma-Free Flag in Recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month

Hospital was the first in the state to be declared a stigma-free zone

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center raised the Stigma-Free flag in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.

“Moments like today’s flag raising remind us how essential accessible mental health services are—especially now, as proposed cuts to critical programs threaten the safety net our neighbors rely on,” said Deborah Visconi, President & CEO, Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. “Illness is illness, and everyone deserves to feel safe asking for help and to receive the care that allows them to live their healthiest, most fulfilling lives.”

The keynote address was given by Rossy Escalante, a social worker in the Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

“The work we do here at Bergen Bridge is so vital because we don’t just provide care, we challenge the harmful and outdated narratives that stand in the way of mental health support,” said Escalante. “This flag is a promise to our community that the Medical Center will remain a safe haven, a stigma free zone where everyone regardless of background can access the care they need without fear of judgement.”

“We understand there is no health without mental health, and we recognize that mental and emotional wellbeing must be prioritized just as much as physical health,” said James Tedesco, Bergen County Executive. “Today’s flag raising is an affirmation of our shared vision to provide the entire region with accessible stigma free care.”

“We stand together to say clearly and proudly there is no shame in seeking help and there is no place for stigma in our community,” said Bergen County Commissioner Germaine Ortiz. “This flag is a symbol of hope and healing and of a future where mental health is treated with the same urgency and compassion as any other health issue.”
